Where to go:

Animal shelters are good places to go to adopt a cat. You can find a wonderful kitten or lovable adult cat companion and feel good knowing you saved her life. Shelters require a small fee, references and answers to questions about your home and life style. They will require you to neuter or spay your pet (See: Cat Care: A Dream Kitten is Born/Spaying and Neutering) if that has not already been done. This agreement has the intention of reducing the population of homeless cats.

Kittens or adult cats for adoption can also be found through private party listings in the newspaper, on bulletin boards at local pet stores or at schools. These animals are generally well-cared for and are in people's homes. If you are calling a newspaper ad, make sure that the kitten is at least 8 weeks old. Kittens taken from their mothers younger than that often suffer serious psychological or health problems. Ideally, a kitten should stay with its mother until at least 12 weeks old. If the mother cat was accidentally mated, ask the person offering the kittens if she has since been spayed. An affirmative answer will give an indication that these are responsible people who care for the mother-- and for her kittens.

Although persons looking for a pedigreed kitten should never buy one at a pet store, pet supply stores that work with local rescue organizations and shelters to help place cat "orphans" are to be commended. These pet supply stores will often advertise "pet adoption days" at their facilities.

Kitten or kat?

Kittens are adorable, but they have disadvantages. They need more care, training and supervision. They go through "wild phases", like the "Terrible Sixes" at six months when they go tearing through the house with unrelentless energy. They need vaccinations, checkups and neutering or spaying. Their future looks and personality is a big "question mark".

With an adult cat, you know what you are getting. Their personalities are completely developed and it is likely they are already altered. Adult cats usually have no difficulty adapting to new homes and bonding with their owners. They are often so grateful to have a secure home!
